7. The Shelly Quarry

Add to plan Remove from plan

The year is 1910, and demand for sandstone has taken off in southern Alberta. Government buildings are popping up all over Calgary, and sandstone's durable nature makes it a go to choice for construction. The Cochrane Ranche's proximity to Calgary and bountiful supply of sandstone makes it the perfect location for a quarry, where this highly sought after rock can be mined. The Shelly Quarry seized this opportunity without hesitation. However the prospect of World War Two loomed over Canada, and the Great Depression that would follow in its wake eventually suffocated many businesses, the Shelly Quarry included. This enterprise may have been short lived, but its legacy stands in the walls of Calgary's historic buildings, a testament to the influence of Cochrane's sandstone.
